Meta: Contractors Accessing Private User Chatbot Conversations

According to a Business Insider report, Meta contractors have access to users' personal data when they converse with chatbots. These contractors, hired through the Outlier and Alignerr platforms, view conversations containing names, phone numbers, emails, gender, hobbies, and other personal data.
The contractors reported that they often saw highly personal conversations, such as confessions, advice seeking, and romantic encounters. Some users even shared selfies or nude photos.
A Meta spokesperson stated that the company has "strict policies" regarding access to personal data and that it limits the data that contractors see. However, Miranda Bogen, director of the AI Governance Lab, warns users not to assume that chatbot conversations are private, as practices vary between companies.
Meta, like other technology companies, uses these conversations to improve its artificial intelligence. Mark Zuckerberg has presented his vision for a "personal superintelligence" that will know users in depth.
