Uber has agreed to invest up to $1.25 billion in the American electric truck manufacturer Rivian, with the aim of purchasing up to 50,000 autonomous vehicles. The initial investment will be $300 million.

The agreement includes 10,000 robotaxis based on Rivian's new R2 SUV, with the option to purchase an additional 40,000 by 2030. The vehicles will begin operating in San Francisco and Miami in 2028 and will expand to 25 cities in the USA, Canada, and Europe by 2031.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi has entered into agreements for autonomous driving, as Uber does not have its own autonomous driving technology. Uber is also partnering with Amazon's Zoox and has a stake in Lucid.

The deal is a boost for Rivian, which aims to launch the cheaper R2 SUV to boost its profits. CEO R.J. Scaringe said the partnership will accelerate the path to Level 4 autonomy.
