Google Warns of New SMS Blaster Threat – How to Protect Yourself

Google is warning of a new threat, SMS Blasters, that bypass mobile networks. These attacks use fake radio communication devices to send SMS directly to devices, geographically targeting high-income areas.
A perpetrator was recently arrested in the United Kingdom for using this technique, with authorities warning about the theft of personal and financial data.
Google emphasizes that provider security filters are useless against SMS Blasters.
Recommended protection measures:
- Disable 2G in your device settings as it is vulnerable.
- Android (Android 16): Settings > Security and privacy > Advanced protection > Enable Device protection.
- iPhone: Use Apple's Lockdown Mode (for high-risk users).
Trend Micro also warns of traditional SMS and email scams, where fraudsters impersonate well-known companies.
Trend Micro Tips:
- Beware of unsolicited communications.
- Check for grammatical errors.
- Reject messages that do not concern you.
Google is upgrading Pixel devices with Scam Detection and Call Screen features for added protection.
