On February 4, 2004, Mark Zuckerberg, then a student at Harvard, launched The Facebook, a platform initially intended for students. The idea came from Zuckerberg's need to create a page where users could connect and share information.

The platform quickly gained popularity, and soon Sean Parker, founder of Napster, suggested Zuckerberg move to California. Parker played a crucial role in removing the 'The' from the name, renaming the platform Facebook.

Investors such as Peter Thiel of PayPal contributed to the growth, and in September 2004, Facebook had over 1 million active users. Microsoft invested $240 million for a 1.6% stake in 2007.

During this period, Zuckerberg faced legal challenges from the Winklevoss brothers, who claimed Zuckerberg stole their idea. Eventually, a settlement was reached with a payment of $65 million.

Facebook continued to grow, acquiring Instagram in 2012 for $1 billion and WhatsApp in 2014 for $22 billion. The company went public in 2012, raising $16 billion.

In 2018, Facebook faced the Cambridge Analytica scandal, where it was revealed that data from millions of users had been shared with third parties without their consent.

Today, Facebook remains one of the largest social networking platforms in the world, with millions of users connecting and sharing information daily.
