Greece Breaks Quarterfinal 'Curse' in Basketball

After 16 years, the Greek National Team has advanced to the semifinals of a major tournament, defeating Lithuania. This victory breaks a streak of five consecutive quarterfinal losses since EuroBasket 2009.

Since 1987, Greece has had 8 wins and 9 losses in quarterfinals. At EuroBasket 2011, Greece lost to France (64-56), while in 2015 they were eliminated by Spain (73-71). In 2017, Russia won 74-69, and at EuroBasket 2022, Germany won 107-96.

At the Mundobasket 2010, Spain eliminated Greece in the round of 16. In 2014, Serbia won 90-72, and in 2019, the Czech Republic left Greece out of the quarterfinals. At the 2024 Olympic Games, Germany won 76-63.

Greece is once again among the top teams in Europe, aiming for the podium.
