American singer-songwriter Neil Sedaka, an emblematic figure in pop music, has died at the age of 86. The news of his death was confirmed by his representative, Victoria Varela.

Neil Sedaka, creator of the hits 'Breaking Up Is Hard to Do' and 'Calendar Girl', left his mark on the music industry for more than seven decades. Born in Brooklyn, he began his career as a classical music prodigy before turning to pop.

In a written statement, his family expressed their sadness at the 'sudden death' of Neil Sedaka, stressing that he was 'a true rock and roll legend'.

Sedaka continued to perform live until the last years of his life, while also returning to his classical roots, composing symphonic works.
