Mapping Fault Lines in Marmara and Aegean Seas for Earthquake Prediction

Turkish academic research aims to map underground zones in the Marmara and Aegean Seas to improve earthquake prediction.
Istanbul Technical University (ITU) has launched an initiative with the research vessel RV Şermet to map unknown areas and gain a clearer picture of the dynamics of active fault lines.
Professor Cenk Yaltırak, the program director, stated that the goal is to understand the impact of future earthquakes, with an emphasis on coastal zones of the Sea of Marmara less than 100 meters deep.
The research team will identify surface traces of active fault lines, particularly on the southern Marmara shelf, and will examine both marine and terrestrial faults.
The three-year program will begin with data collection, aiming to improve the assessment and prevention of seismic risks in the region.
