Earth's Rotation Speeding Up: Shortest Day in History?

Today, humanity is expected to experience one of the shortest calendar days ever recorded, as the Earth completes its full rotation slightly faster than the standard 24 hours.
The difference compared to a normal day will be in the order of 1.34 milliseconds. If this trend persists, it may be necessary to implement, for the first time in history, the removal of one second from global time – known as a 'negative leap second' – around 2029.
Since 2020, the Earth has repeatedly broken the record for fastest rotation. The fastest day was recorded on July 5, 2024, when the Earth's rotation was completed 1.66 milliseconds earlier than normal.
According to experts, these small but calculable deviations can, over time, create technical problems in computing systems, telecommunications networks, and satellite services.
