Archaeologists have discovered a sealed chamber in a Gibraltar cave, untouched for 40,000 years. The discovery, in Gorham's Cave, offers valuable insights into the lives of Neanderthals.

Gorham's Cave, located on Governor’s Beach, contains artifacts that act as a 'museum' of daily life for Neanderthals, who inhabited Europe and Asia from approximately 400,000 to 40,000 years ago.

Evidence includes hunting of birds and marine animals, the use of feathers for decoration, and rock engravings. In 2024, a 60,000-year-old oven was found, likely used for making glue from birch tar.

Clive Finlayson, director of the Gibraltar National Museum, reported the discovery of a seashell deep within the cave, indicating human presence. Excavations are ongoing, with the potential for new passages to be revealed.
