Beer Yeast: Research Team Identifies Potential Therapeutic Uses

A research team has developed an innovative method for producing and analyzing macrocyclic peptides, utilizing beer yeast. Macrocyclic peptides are increasingly used in modern medicine due to their precision, stability, and safety.
The researchers, led by the Ca' Foscari University of Venice, modified beer yeast cells to produce these peptides. Each cell functions as a miniature factory, allowing for the rapid identification of promising peptides through fluorescence techniques.
Alessandro Angelini, associate professor at Ca' Foscari University, emphasized that this technology could revolutionize treatments by delivering targeted therapies to specific cells. Part of the technology has been patented and acquired by an Italian startup.
