Glass Bottles: Experts Warn of Higher Microplastic Levels
Share on:

A new study by the French food safety agency ANSES reveals that glass bottles containing water, soft drinks, beer, and wine contain more microplastics compared to plastic bottles and aluminum cans.

Researchers found an average of approximately 100 microplastic particles per liter in glass bottles of soft drinks, lemonade, iced tea, and beer, a quantity 5 to 50 times greater than that detected in plastic bottles or aluminum cans. Iseline Chaib, a doctoral student involved in the research, linked the presence of microplastics to the paint on the caps of glass bottles.

The study found that the amount of microplastics in water was relatively low, while it was higher in beer. ANSES noted that it has not yet been determined whether these amounts of microplastics pose a health risk, but suggested that manufacturers consider methods to reduce contamination from bottle caps.

A tested cleaning method reduced contamination by 60%.
