A new study in the journal Science suggests that the human brain continues to produce new neurons throughout life, particularly in the hippocampus, a region critical for memory and learning.

Researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm detected 'progenitor cells,' an intermediate stage of neuron maturation, confirming neurogenesis in the adult brain. The study examined tissues from 14 individuals aged 20 to 78 years, with younger individuals showing more progenitor cells.

The findings suggest that neurogenesis is influenced by environmental and biological factors, opening avenues for studies of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.
