Greek Scientists Develop Portable MRI Scanner

Two Greek scientists, Panos and Tryfonas Antonakakis, based in Geneva, are developing a portable MRI scanner through their company, Multiwave Technologies. Their goal is to make MRI accessible in remote areas and islands.
The idea arose after an accident involving Tryfonas Antonakakis, a former acrobatic skier, highlighting the difficulties in accessing diagnostic tools. The portable scanner weighs 240 kg, compared to conventional ones weighing 5-15 tons.
Multiwave has secured $28 million in funding and aims for FDA certification to enter the US market. They are also planning to create a brain database for research purposes.
