NASA 'Zombie' Satellite Emits Signal After 57 Years of Silence

An inactive NASA satellite, Relay 2, emitted a strong radio signal in June 2024, after 57 years of silence. The satellite was decommissioned in 1967 due to a failure in its transponders.
The radio wave burst, lasting 30 nanoseconds, was detected by Clancy James and his team at the Curtin University Institute of Radio Astronomy.
Researchers believe the signal was caused either by a micrometeorite impact or an electrostatic discharge. The study highlights the problem of inactive satellites that can interfere with scientific observations.
