Sleep Paralysis: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Sleep paralysis is a condition where a person wakes up unable to move or speak. Despite the frightening experience, it is usually harmless.
What it is: Occurs when the brain wakes up before the body fully exits the REM phase. Muscles remain temporarily 'deactivated'.
Symptoms: Inability to move/speak, chest pressure, fear, hallucinations.
Causes: Lack of sleep, irregular hours, stress, alcohol/stimulant use, sleeping on your back.
Treatment: Remember it's temporary, try small movements, maintain slow breathing.
Prevention: 7-9 hours of sleep, regular schedule, regular exercise, avoid heavy meals/alcohol/caffeine before bed.
Medical advice: Necessary if episodes are frequent or cause severe anxiety.
