Sclerotherapy: An Effective Solution for Spider Veins

Sclerotherapy is a reliable method for eliminating spider veins, small red, purple, or blue veins that appear under the skin, mainly on the legs and face. Mr. Konstantinos N. Xiromeritis, a Vascular Surgeon, explains that spider veins often occur due to increased venous pressure.

Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution of polidocanol (aethoxysklerol), which causes the veins to close. In contrast, laser treatment uses thermal energy for smaller veins, mainly on the face. The choice depends on the size, location, and skin type.

How sclerotherapy works: A chemical solution is injected into the vein, causing scarring and reabsorption. It is effective for larger spider veins and varicose veins on the legs. The treatment is invasive (injections) and safer for dark skin. Fewer sessions are required, with an immediate return to daily life, although bruising may occur.

Mr. Xiromeritis emphasizes that success depends on phlebological examination and normalization of venous circulation.
