Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro underwent an unscheduled surgery on Tuesday to treat persistent hiccups, his wife announced.

The 70-year-old Bolsonaro had already undergone two surgeries since last Saturday at a hospital in Brasilia for the same reason. He had also previously undergone surgery for an inguinal hernia.

Michelle Bolsonaro stated in an Instagram post that doctors proceeded with the new surgery after the far-right politician experienced persistent hiccups again around 10 a.m. (3:00 p.m. Cyprus time).

Bolsonaro, who began serving a 27-year prison sentence for an attempted coup after his defeat in the 2022 elections, was released from prison last Wednesday, with the consent of the Supreme Court, to undergo surgery to correct an inguinal hernia. His doctors then decided to proceed with other surgeries to stop the persistent hiccups.

The former president, who was seriously injured in 2018 when he was stabbed during his election campaign, has been admitted to hospitals many times in recent years due to health problems caused by that attack.
