A study reveals that nasal congestion and sinus problems are common among astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS). The lack of gravity causes fluid accumulation in the head, leading to congestion and reduced performance.

Researchers at Houston Methodist Hospital examined 754 medical incidents involving 71 ISS astronauts between 2000 and 2019. 85% reported nasal congestion or sinus discomfort.

Dr. Masayoshi Takashima, the study's lead, emphasized that congestion can affect astronauts' cognitive functions and reaction times. Additionally, spacewalks increase the risk of sinus and ear injuries due to pressure differences.

Existing medications are often ineffective in space. These problems add to other health issues faced by astronauts, such as muscle and bone atrophy and radiation exposure.
