Pantelas: First aid guidelines in case of radioactive leak

The President of the Saint John Association and Brigade, Cyprus, Giorgos Pantelas, provided guidelines for administering first aid in the event of a radioactive leak. As he stated to CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY, first aid in these cases concerns protection from invisible dangers.
Mr. Pantelas emphasized the need to protect the respiratory system and skin. He advised citizens to stay indoors with windows and doors closed, discontinuing the operation of ventilation and air conditioners. If someone is outside, he recommended using a mask or scarf and long-sleeved clothing.
In addition, he stressed the importance of removing clothing that may have been contaminated, as this can reduce radioactivity by up to 90%. He also recommended washing the body with plenty of water and mild soap, as well as using a protective mask and gloves.
Regarding the management of radiation symptoms, Mr. Pantelas said that it includes dealing with nausea, vomiting, fever or rashes, hydration, rest and immediate transfer to a medical unit. In addition, he stressed the importance of psychological support, with panic and anxiety management, provision of basic psychological first aid and information with clear and reliable instructions.
Regarding first aid equipment, Mr. Pantelas mentioned the need for a first aid kit with gloves, masks, bandages, antiseptics and, if available, radiation meters. He also recommended providing emergency instructions in printed form.
Finally, he stressed the need for public education and preparedness.
