Daily Exercise: A Shield for the Brain

New research reveals that daily exercise can act as a protective shield against age-related brain deterioration. The study, published in the European Journal of Neuroscience, examined the relationship between physical activity and cognitive health in middle-aged and older adults.

The research, involving 19,721 individuals aged 45-82 years, showed that increased physical activity is associated with improved numerical memory, larger overall brain volume, more gray and white matter, and a larger hippocampus, a brain region crucial for memory and learning.

Furthermore, the study demonstrated that active individuals had better vascular health in the brain and fewer lesions associated with vascular damage and cognitive decline. This reduction in lesions explained approximately 30% of the positive effect of exercise on memory.

The results highlight that physical activity not only improves mood and cardiovascular health but also preserves the structure of the brain, protects white matter and blood vessels, and supports the neural networks necessary for memory.
