EODY: 75 West Nile Virus Cases and 5 Deaths in Greece

EODY announced that from the beginning of 2025 until September 10, 75 cases of West Nile virus infection have been diagnosed and investigated in Greece.
62 cases presented manifestations from the Central Nervous System (CNS), such as encephalitis, meningitis, or acute flaccid paralysis, while 13 cases had mild manifestations.
During the last week, six new domestic cases were diagnosed. In addition, two imported cases from Serbia and Italy were recorded, which are not included in the analysis of domestic cases.
Five deaths have been recorded in patients with the virus infection and manifestations from the CNS, aged over 71 years.
Cases have been recorded in 34 municipalities and 18 regional units of the country.
In addition to Greece, cases have been recorded in Albania, Bulgaria, France, Italy, Spain, Hungary, Romania and Serbia.
EODY considers the occurrence of further cases likely and emphasizes the importance of epidemiological surveillance, mosquito control programs and personal protection measures.
