Adolescence: Diet linked to delayed first period
Share on:

A new US study suggests that a healthy diet in adolescence may be associated with a delay in the onset of the first period in girls. The research examined approximately 7,500 children, aged 9 to 14 years, who participated in the Growing Up Today Study (GUTS) in 1996 and 2004.

Holly Harris, MPH, ScD, from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, emphasized the importance of children having access to healthy meal options, highlighting the role of school breakfasts and lunches.

The study showed that 20% of girls who followed healthy dietary patterns were 8% less likely to have their first period within the next month, compared to 20% of girls who consumed unhealthy foods. Conversely, girls who consumed unhealthy foods were 15% more likely to have their first period within the next month.

Researchers note that a delayed onset of menstruation is not associated with health problems, while early onset may increase the risk of conditions such as diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and breast cancer.
