Blue Monday 2026: The Most Melancholy Day of the Year

Blue Monday, which falls on January 19th, 2026, is considered by many to be the most melancholy day of the year. The term originated in 2005 with the British company Sky Travel, which, in collaboration with psychologist Cliff Arnall, developed a formula that supposedly identified the third Monday of January as the day with the lowest levels of happiness.
However, the scientific validity of Blue Monday is heavily disputed. Psychologist Dr. Magdalena Nowicka emphasizes that there are no reliable studies confirming the existence of this phenomenon, and Cliff Arnall himself has described his work as pseudoscience.
Experts warn that expecting a particularly bad day can act as a self-fulfilling prophecy, negatively affecting mood. Furthermore, the idea of Blue Monday can underestimate the complexity of emotions and conditions such as depression and anxiety.
Even if Blue Monday is a myth, there are practical tips for managing negative emotions: acknowledge your feelings, talk to the people around you, value self-care, set realistic goals, and limit stressors.
