Autoimmune Diseases: Doubled Risk of Depression & Mental Disorders

A new scientific study published in BMJ Mental Health reveals that autoimmune diseases significantly increase the risk of developing mental disorders. Sufferers are up to twice as likely to experience depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder.
The study, from the University of Edinburgh, highlights the role of chronic inflammation in the onset of mental illnesses. The research was based on data from 1.5 million participants in the “Our Future Health” program in the United Kingdom.
The results showed that 29% of people with autoimmune diseases had been diagnosed with an emotional disorder, compared to 18% of the general population. Women with autoimmune diseases experienced higher rates of emotional disorders (32%) compared to men (21%).
Researchers emphasize the need for a holistic approach to autoimmune diseases, with an emphasis on mental health support for patients and regular screening for mental disorders.
