Physical exercise can serve as a 'first-line treatment' for depression and anxiety, with effects comparable to or even superior to medication and psychotherapy, according to a new scientific review.

The study, published in the *British Journal of Sports Medicine*, highlights that exercising in a group setting or with supervision enhances therapeutic outcomes. Low-intensity exercise programs lasting two months appear sufficient for anxiety reduction.

All forms of exercise, from weight training to yoga and tai chi, appear equally effective. Researchers emphasize that exercise reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety at all ages, to a degree comparable to conventional treatments.

Young adults and postpartum women benefit the most from exercise. Aerobic exercise shows the strongest results in treating depression.

The study underscores the importance of group and supervised activities and the need for personalized exercise 'prescription'. Due to its low cost and ease of access, exercise is a promising first-line intervention.
