French scientists have discovered a new blood type called 'Gwada negative'. This group is considered extremely rare, as the woman who carries it is currently the only known person in the world with this profile.

The discovery was certified by the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) and registered as the 48th recognized blood group system.

The peculiarity of the woman's blood was detected in 2011 during a routine blood test before surgery in Paris. In 2019, the scientific team managed to explain the phenomenon through DNA sequencing, identifying a rare genetic mutation.

The group was named 'Gwada negative' in reference to the woman's origin from Guadeloupe. The significance of the discovery is both scientific and clinical, as it allows for better care of patients with rare hematological needs.
