UK: Magic Mushrooms Being Considered for Depression Treatment

In the UK, the use of psychedelic substances, such as "magic mushrooms," is being considered for the treatment of depression and other mental disorders. New studies suggest that psychedelic drugs could help treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, PTSD, trauma, and addictions such as alcohol and gambling.

The use of psychedelic medicine is currently illegal unless it is done in the context of approved research or clinical trials. However, since 2022, more than 20 such trials have examined different psychedelic drugs for conditions such as depression, PTSD, and addiction.

The UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency is awaiting data as it considers relaxing strict restrictions to allow the use of psychedelic drugs outside of research settings.

Professor Oliver Howes, Chair of the Psychopharmacology Committee of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, is optimistic but stresses the need for caution and evidence.

A report by the Royal College of Psychiatrists, published in September 2025, highlighted the potential risks of psychedelics, while doctors emphasize that the use of psychedelics is not only illegal but can also be harmful.

At University College London, neuroscientist Dr. Ravi Das is trying to understand why some habits develop into addictions while others disappear, and believes that psychedelics may help answer this question.
