Greece Responds to Turkey: Turkish Practices Don't Allow for Guidance
Share on:

Greece has responded to Turkey, emphasizing that Turkish practices do not allow for guidance. Diplomatic sources stated that Greece will continue to uphold international law and good neighborly relations, responding to the statement by Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oncu Keceli.

Oncu Keceli accused the European Union of its stance on the Turkey-Libya memorandum and Greece and Cyprus of 'maximalist claims'. Greek sources responded that invoking international law presupposes its universal adoption.

The failure of Turkey to sign the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the overturning of centuries-old status of world heritage monuments, and the threat of war in the event of exercising a right arising from international law were also highlighted.

The reaction comes after the announcement of the conclusions of the European Council Summit in Brussels, where the Turkish Foreign Ministry called on the EU to ask its member states to comply with international law.

Turkey, in its statement, said that the 2019 Turkey-Libya memorandum fully complies with international law and that it will continue to defend its legitimate rights and interests in the Eastern Mediterranean.
