"The Synanon Fix," started as a drug rehabilitation group in the late 1950s by Charles Dederich, transformed into a dangerous cult. The group, known as Synanon, began in Santa Monica and expanded across the country.

From a self-help initiative, it evolved into a cult where members were willing to undergo forced vasectomies and attempt to murder their critics.

During the 1970s, Dederich imposed bizarre requirements, such as shaving heads, strict diets, and exercise programs. Men were pressured into vasectomies, and women into abortions. Children were separated from their parents and subjected to grueling labor.

In 1978, Synanon made headlines when lawyer Paul Morantz nearly died from a rattlesnake bite, placed in his mailbox by cult members.

In 2023, the documentary "The Synanon Fix," directed by Rory Kennedy, was released, chronicling the group's transformation from utopia to violence and manipulation. Screenwriter Mark Bailey emphasized the danger of Dederich's unchecked influence on Synanon members.

The documentary includes archival footage and testimonies from former members, revealing the group's practices and Dederich's authoritarian leadership.
