Social Media: Toxic Comparison & the 'Perfect' Self

A new study reveals that the use of filters on social media, which create a 'perfect self,' leads to toxic comparison and negative impacts on users' self-image.

According to the research, which involved individuals aged 19 to 66, those who used slimming filters felt more dissatisfied with their appearance and had a more critical attitude towards people with a plus-size body type.

Makenzie Schroeder, head of the research and a graduate student at the University of Missouri, notes that filters create an idealized image of the self that intensifies comparison.

The research was published on newmoney.gr.
