Drowning 'Scourge' in Greece: Second Leading Cause of Death After Traffic Accidents

Drowning is a serious problem in Greece, ranking as the second leading cause of death after traffic accidents. According to statistics, approximately three people die every day during the summer months while swimming in the sea and pools.
From June to September 2024, 338 deaths were recorded, while from June to August 2025, there were 229 deaths. Despite its extensive coastline and tourism potential, Greece has a high number of drownings.
