Water Scarcity: Positive Signs in Mornos Due to Rainfall

There are optimistic signs regarding the water reserves of Lake Mornos in early 2026, after 10 months of continuous decline. Increased rainfall and snowfall in Western Greece have led to an increase in the lake's area.
According to meteorologist Kostas Lagouvardos, the lake's area rose to 10 sq km in January, from 7.6 sq km in November. There was a significant increase in EYDAP's reserves, with almost 45 million cubic meters of water added in two weeks.
Despite the improvement, the lake's area remains reduced by 39% compared to the average of the 2016-2024 period. Meteorological forecasts are positive, with expected rainfall in Western Greece.
Snow cover in Greece on January 12, 2026, reached 19% of the country's total area, slightly higher than the seasonal average.
Reserves in the Mornos reservoir have increased significantly, reaching 245 million cubic meters of water, according to EYDAP data. However, the overall picture has not changed dramatically.
The three-year period 2022-2025 was the driest period for Athens since the beginning of the 20th century, with 2025 being characterized as an extremely dry year.
