Domestic Violence: Infant Homicides in Greece

Instances of domestic violence, including infant homicides by parents, have increased in Greece over the last decade, according to Dr. Theodora Papadopoulou Chamouza.
Data from the Institute of Child Health indicates that over 100 children die each year in Greece as a result of abuse by their parents, while approximately 4,000 children are severely abused annually.
Dr. Papadopoulou Chamouza explains that parenthood can bring back unconscious experiences from the parents' childhood, which, if not healed, can lead to extreme behaviors. She emphasizes the need for collective effort and social support to protect children, as well as investment in mental health.
The collapse of social institutions and values, combined with the devaluation of human life, contribute to the reproduction of violence. Dr. Papadopoulou Chamouza stresses that society must decode messages of violence and protect its vulnerable members.
