When Freddie Mercury Dressed Diana as a Man for a Gay Bar Outing

An alleged incident in London, where Freddie Mercury dressed Princess Diana as a man to visit a leather gay bar, is revived in Dianaworld: An Obsession, a book by Edward White.

The story, originally revealed in actress Cleo Rocos's memoirs, describes an evening where Diana, Mercury, comedian Kenny Everett, and Rocos spent time drinking champagne and watching The Golden Girls. Diana then insisted on accompanying the group to a gay bar.

According to Rocos, Everett disguised Diana with a military jacket, hat, and sunglasses to avoid being recognized at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern. Despite her friends' fear that her identity would be revealed, Diana enjoyed the evening and reportedly asked to do it again.

However, Mercury's former assistant, Peter Freestone, disputes the story, claiming it never happened. White acknowledges that the story may be a myth but aligns with Diana's desire to escape royal life.

Regardless of the truth of the story, it has become a symbol of Diana's connection to the gay community and her search for acceptance.
