Five Regions in "Code Red" Due to Severe Weather – Possible School Closures in Attica

Five regions in Greece have been placed in a "code red" state due to the impending severe weather. The General Secretariat for Civil Protection advises citizens to be especially careful and take self-protection measures.
The regions in a state of alert are Attica, the Peloponnese, Central Greece, Thessaly, and Western Macedonia.
The Attica Region is considering the possibility of schools remaining closed tomorrow due to the intense weather phenomena. According to the National Meteorological Service (EMY), the main characteristics of the severe weather are heavy rains and thunderstorms, locally heavy snowfall in the mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of mainland Greece, and gale-force winds.
Meteorologists warn of an increased risk of flooding, especially in Attica. Theodoros Kolydas, former director of EMY, stated that the severe weather will begin on the morning of Wednesday, January 21, 2026, and will last until noon on Thursday, January 22, 2026.
Minor problems have been recorded in the ports of western Greece, while the Rio-Antirrio ferry line remains closed.
