Former Defense Minister Panos Kammenos referred to a phone call between then-US President Barack Obama and then-Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in 2015, calling it the 'key' to developments.

According to Mr. Kammenos, the phone call from Brussels was crucial. Mr. Tsipras had stated that Obama had informed him of the pressure being exerted to lead Greece to a national currency.

Mr. Tsipras had stated that Obama told him, 'After your victory in the referendum, you are the master of political developments in Greece,' but also that 'forces have rallied against you who want to torpedo the negotiation today.'

Mr. Tsipras added that 'the Americans and Social Democrat Vice-Chancellor Gabriel were pressuring Merkel in the direction of Greece remaining in the euro,' while Schäuble and other Eurozone leaders were pushing in the opposite direction.
