Airspace Blackout: HCAA and Ministry of Transport Investigate

An investigation is underway into the blackout that caused problems in Greek airspace on January 4th. The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport are examining the causes of the incident.
Initial reports mentioned interference, but the possibility of a technical malfunction in the HCAA's communication system is now being considered. According to reports, air traffic controllers experienced difficulties in transmitting messages, suggesting an internal problem.
One possible scenario is a malfunction in the leased telecommunication circuits used by the HCAA. The age of the equipment is also noted. The Hellenic Air Force has an independent system, which was not affected by the incident.
The Hellenic Air Traffic Controllers Association (EEEKE) speaks of systemic problems and inadequate maintenance of equipment.
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has announced an action plan to upgrade air navigation systems.
