Mitsotakis: Joint European Funding for Defense

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in an interview with Politico, advocated for the creation of a joint European borrowing mechanism to finance defense.

Mr. Mitsotakis stressed that defense is a public good and should be funded at the European level. He proposed the issuance of joint European debt to support defense projects, provided that these are defined as European public goods.

The Commission has proposed relaxing fiscal rules for investments in rearmament programs, but there is disagreement among member states regarding the mutualization of debt.

The Prime Minister also referred to the need for joint procurement and the development of new technologies, such as drones and artificial intelligence.

Finally, he sent a message regarding climate policy, stressing that the green transition should not be an end in itself and that there must be a balance with competitiveness and social cohesion.
