Kikilias: Intensified fire safety inspections on ships

By order of the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Vassilis Kikilias, fire safety inspections on ships are being intensified, especially in garage areas.

The decision comes after a fire broke out in a refrigeration unit of a refrigerated truck in the garage of the E/G-O/G "Superfast I", which had sailed from the port of Bari, Italy, to Igoumenitsa.

As part of the extraordinary inspections, additional checks will be carried out in the area of both active and passive fire protection of ships. Special emphasis will be placed on familiarizing crews through the execution of fire safety exercises.

The E/G-O/G ships that operate short international voyages between Greek and Italian ports are inspected by authorized Greek and Italian inspectors twice a year.
