Greece Between Two Worlds: Transition and Digitalization
Share on:

Greece is in a transitional phase, striving to move away from the Eastern model and adopt the Western one. It is important for citizens that the system functions smoothly, such as enrolling children in schools and accessing healthcare services.

Before 2010, Greece implemented an Eastern-style system, where transactions often occurred informally. Today, the country is trying to digitize the public sector, aiming to reduce bureaucracy and citizen inconvenience.

Since 2019, digitalization has brought changes, such as avoiding queues at tax offices and banks through gov.gr. However, bureaucracy remains a challenge, especially in municipalities where digitalization is limited.

A significant development is the personal number from September, which will function as a single identification number for transactions with the Public sector, correcting errors and improving the interconnection of state registers.

Interventions and reforms must continue and accelerate, in order to expand digital applications and facilitate the lives of citizens.
