Greek KYP Files: Cold War and Communist Threat Unveiled
Share on:

123 documents from the Greek Central Intelligence Service (KYP), dating from 1953-1959, have been released, revealing aspects of post-civil war Greece and the Cold War.

The documents include information, assessments, and analyses regarding the countries of the Soviet bloc, the activities of Greeks abroad, and the internal situation of the country in relation to communist action. The first report, in July 1953, concerns the United Democratic Left (EDA).

The 1953 report proposes "restriction solutions" for EDA, with the author arguing in favor of its dissolution. It also mentions that EDA's free action influences part of the "national-minded world." Another point in the report states that Papagos "doesn't have the guts" to strike EDA.

Other documents reveal that KYP requested the establishment of a "Communism and Anti-Communism" course in military schools. Also, KYP advised on the prohibition of delivering parcels from countries of the "Iron Curtain" to prisoners, while expressing concerns about the behavior of Greek students abroad, proposing measures such as certificates of loyalty.

In January 1956, KYP reports that the communist leadership discontinued radio broadcasts and that the KKE would participate in the elections.
