Maintenance on Syntagma Square Fountain in Athens

Maintenance and restoration work is underway on the historic fountain in Syntagma Square in Athens, as announced by the Municipality of Athens. The fountain has been closed for several weeks due to the works.
According to the municipality, the works are being carried out with "surgical precision" as the fountain is a monument dating back to 1872. The aim is to deliver and open it as soon as possible, possibly within August.
The fountain was installed in the late 19th century and bears the inscription "MUNICIPALITY OF ATHENS 1872". Its central element was designed by Ernesto Ziller. The Municipality of Athens is carrying out the maintenance as part of the project "Maintenance of outdoor sculptures of the Municipality of Athens".
Syntagma Square is a reference point for the political and social life of Athens. It was originally known as "Palace Square" and was renamed after the revolution of September 3, 1843.
