First Case of Sheep and Goat Pox Confirmed in Ithaca – Veterinary Alert

The first case of sheep and goat pox has been detected in Ithaca, at a livestock farm in the Perachori area, involving 200 animals. Authorities have been mobilized to contain the disease.
According to Deputy Regional Governor Sotiris Kouris, the prescribed procedures will be followed, and the animals on the farm will be euthanized. A team from the Veterinary Department of the Directorate of Agricultural Economy and Veterinary Medicine of the Regional Unit of Kefalonia and Ithaca is expected to conduct inspections on all livestock farms on the island.
Furthermore, strict biosecurity measures are being implemented in the wider area. Kefalonia, to which Ithaca administratively belongs, has also been affected by cases of sheep pox in the past, increasing the concern of livestock farmers ahead of Easter.
