Patras: Mourning for 33-year-old Dimitris Kantas Killed in the Alps

Shock and grief have been caused in Patras by the death of 33-year-old mountaineer Dimitris Kantas, who lost his life in the Alps, on Mont Blanc.

Dimitris Kantas was a basketball player and avid mountaineer. Condolences were expressed by friends and teammates from Panachaiki, as well as the Hellenic Mountaineering Club (EOS) of Patras.

According to a publication in Libération, the Mountain Gendarmerie of Chamonix (PGHM) confirmed that Kantas was found dead after a fall in the upper part of the Goûter trail, also known as the 'death route'.

Authorities reported that the 33-year-old was descending alone and without a rope, carrying a heavy backpack, which likely contributed to his fall.
