Long Queues for Halva in Palaia Kokkinia: 132 Years of Tradition
Share on:

Dozens of people queued in Palaia Kokkinia, Nikaia, to buy traditional halva from the "Kritikos" store. The store has been operating since 1894.

The history of Kritikos halva making began in Asia Minor, when Emmanouil Kritikos learned the art of handmade halva. After the Asia Minor Catastrophe of 1922, he arrived in Piraeus and continued the production of halva and loukoumi.

Today, the third and fourth generations of the family continue the tradition, making handmade halva and other tahini-based products. "Kritikos" halva is also available in bakeries and grocery stores in Athens.
