Rockslides on Odontotos Railway: Services Suspended

Rockslides have occurred on the tracks of the Odontotos railway, in the Vouraikos Gorge area, leading to the suspension of services.
According to an announcement, the decision to suspend the Diakopto-Kalavryta tourist route was deemed necessary until a new assessment of the conditions is carried out and geological studies are completed.
The phenomenon of landslides is linked to the morphology of Mount Helmos and weather conditions. Recently, a rock ended up on the line while a train was passing, causing material damage.
The company «Hellenic Railways» (OSE) has taken surveillance measures, such as inspections before services and the installation of seismographic and meteorological stations. However, the frequency of landslides made it necessary to suspend services for the safety of passengers and workers.
The Odontotos railway line, 22 kilometers long, was built in 1896 and is considered an important technical project.
