Kastania Pogonou: A Village with History and Tradition

Kastania, a village in the Pogonou area of Ioannina, maintains its tradition despite challenges. The village has a long history, with references dating back to the Roman era. According to Ioannis Lampridis, before the Turkish conquest, Kastania had 1,200 families. The area has been influenced by various conquerors and events, such as the Turkish conquest, Albanian raids, and the plague.
In the summer, Kastania comes alive with events and festivals. The village's Brotherhood, in collaboration with the local community, organizes multi-day cultural events. This year, the events included a folk night, a speech on the history of the village, a two-day festival, and a youth night. Despite the challenges, Kastania remains a vibrant village with strong ties to tradition.
The residents of Kastania fought alongside the Souliotes against Ali Pasha. Pogonoi was liberated in late February - early March 1913. Kastania was definitively integrated into Greece with the Second Protocol of Florence (1924). Many of its residents had settled in Constantinople and elsewhere.
The Border Guard Department operating in the village is very important for the safety of residents.
