Hymettus Fire: Started from Undeclared Beehives

The fire that broke out on Mount Hymettus started from undeclared beehives within the campus of the National Technical University of Athens (E.K.P.A.), near a wooded area with pine trees. According to the Fire Department's investigation, fines of €2,800 were imposed on the two beekeepers.
Extinguishing the fire required the intervention of 110 firefighters with 5 teams of forest commandos, 30 vehicles, volunteers, and water trucks from the Attica Region. Additionally, 11 aircraft and 8 helicopters were used.
The fines were imposed due to the lack of fire safety measures at the apiaries. Specifically, violations were found regarding the clearing of vegetation around the hives, the absence of registration numbers, and owner information on the hives.
Two smokers were confiscated as evidence, and the two offenders admitted to failing to take safety measures. Furthermore, a fine of €5,175 was imposed on the Rector of E.K.P.A. due to waste within the university campus, which could have aided in the spread of the fire.
