Cargo Ship Runs Aground in Sitia: Crew Abandons Ship

A cargo ship flying the flag of Sierra Leone ran aground in the Kyriamadi area of Sitia. The incident occurred on Thursday evening.
According to the Coast Guard, the captain requested the abandonment of the ship due to a small inflow of water and a slight list. The 14-member crew is safe and was transferred to the port of Sitia by a fishing boat.
A tugboat, three Coast Guard vessels, two merchant ships and private boats rushed to the scene to provide assistance.
The ship was carrying gypsum and was destined for Lebanon. Authorities are examining the condition of the ship and the options for its removal.
