Student Housing: Difficult Conditions and Proposed Solutions

Thousands of students and their families face increased anxiety due to the limited availability of old and expensive housing. In cities such as Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras, and Crete, rental prices have reached record levels.
Specifically, in Zografou, prices reach €12 per sq.m. (approximately €500 for 40 sq.m.), in Patras the cost reaches €410, in Heraklion €360, in Komotini €375, while in Thessaloniki they exceed €480. Many studios are small and old, often over 50 years old.
POMIDA has proposed to the Ministry of Education the creation of a digital platform for student housing, which will operate through universities or Gov.gr. The aim is to provide direct and transparent access to available homes.
POMIDA also reminds students and parents not to rush, to consider options outside the areas near universities, to organize their search, and to carefully check the houses before signing a contract.
Lease agreements are submitted electronically via Taxisnet, with the owner entering the lease details and the tenant electronically accepting the declaration. The issuance of an Energy Performance Certificate is mandatory.
